This is one of the highest quality projectors that can be found for under $600 on Amazon. Like most 120 Hz, 1080p projectors, this model can project super-white at times, with extreme blacks and a full color spectrum. . The contrast ratio between dark colors is phenomenal. Known for its color quality and accuracy, this projector certainly casts a sharp image which is supplemented with clear 10-watt audio.
optoma-hd141x-2For gamers and videophiles that prefer to consume their entertainment choices simultaneously, the projector features connectivity to multiple sources at once. For example, once connected, you may switch the HDMI sources to play games on your console, or connect to a Roku box to watch a movie on Netflix.
The projector shoots brightly against both white and lightly-colored walls, if you prefer to view media without the aid of a projection screen. When shined on the wall, the picture experienced little to no loss of quality. And, if you were to stand less than twenty feet away, the output will not blind you, though it is vivid enough to keep you from turning on light fixtures in the room – even at night. Also, if the bulb starts to dim, or needs to be replaced, this model’s replacement bulb is reasonably affordable at approximately $200, less than half the cost of competitor’s bulbs.
Illustrious Color and Crisp Sound
Full 3D capable 1080p display with 3000 lumens
Brightness needs to be toned down for Office Applications like Microsoft Word
Movies and television shows come through with supreme clarity. Though sometimes white can be a bit too vibrant, or appear as a washed-out gray, this is mostly limited to laptop use, such as with the Windows background or if projecting a MS Word document. The only considerable “brightness” issue lies with 3-D movies. Active 3-D glasses skew brightness and can make for warped viewing.
The projector can be set up with ease and applying the lens zoom is simple. The focus can be set up and stabilized rather quickly. The device’s menus are clear and easy to peruse. There is no need to time-set the Hz, because movies and television shows always sync properly with the source. This is because there is no noticeable input lag, which is the delay between the projector receiving a signal and the signal being displayed.
The extreme clarity of the projector’s image rivals the majority of the leading televisions on the market today. You will not see the rapid shaking known as judder, there isn’t any choppiness and the picture is never blurry. The Image Shift and V Keystone features further adjust the picture to accommodate floor placement or hanging from the ceiling. Image Shift shifts the image horizontally and vertically while the V Keystone relieves any distortion caused by the respective placements and projects an image which appears more squared. If you choose to place the projector on the ground, the unit has screws at the bottom that can be adjusted to ensure projection at a perfect angle every time. You can read the instructions to see how to change the base’s shape for floor placement.
The projector also has an “auto-on” component, which will turn the unit on, if a connected device, such as a laptop or console, is turned on. Conversely, using the sleep timer, you can set the unit to shut itself off at a pre-set time.
Sometimes the white backgrounds associated with MS Word and Internet Explorer can become bright enough over a period of time to cause intense headaches. It can be hard to concentrate for long intervals without resting your eyes for a bit. Ironically, the vibrancy of some of the yellows and orange colors in some games can be too vibrant in proportion to other colors around it, and could possibly be toned down a bit.
The remote control, which is an electric florescent blue, tends to annoy. The bright, shining backlight tends to wear on the remote’s batteries, and constantly replacing them can be costly.
Connecting the projector to your gaming console is also simple and quick. Very few adjustments are necessary since the projector automatically picks up on color and resolution settings of the console. Also, for games that do not output to 1080p, the projector has a feature that switches play over to 720p. This preserves the integrity of the image and prevents stretching.
An annoyance about this unit is that it projects a “rainbow effect.” The rainbow effect is a stroboscopic phenomenon featuring flashes of red, green, and blue from white objects moving quickly past a black background. Though only five percent of the population can see this effect, it is really bothersome to those that do. This must be expected with any single chip DLP projector, especially those priced under $1000.
Even though this unit retails near $600, it is worth every penny. As a gamer, I enjoy the illustrious color and crisp sound, and as a common office worker, I appreciate its simplicity for the weekly presentations I have to make. The Optoma HD141X is versatile and meets all of my projector needs.
